สืบเนื่องจาก เมื่อช่วงเวลาบ่ายสองโมงของวันจันทร์ที่ 12 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ.2551 ที่ผ่านมา ได้เกิดเหตุแผ่นดินไหวขนาด 7.9ริกเตอร์ ที่มณฑลเสฉวน มีศูนย์กลางอยู่ที่เมืองเวิ่นชวน ห่างจากเมืองเฉิงตูไป 100กิโลเมตร จุดศูนย์กลางของแผ่นดินไหวลึกลงไปไต้ดินเพียง 10กิโลเมตร ทำให้เกิดความเสียหายอย่างรุนแรง สามารถรับรู้ความสั่นสะเทือนได้ถึงเกาะฮ่องกง และตึกสูงในกรุงเทพมหานคร
